The most frequently asked questions in the seat customising and motorcycle seat business involve Foam. I must say that it is important enough to look into the different options when looking for comfortable seats.
Some custom motorcycle seat sites say foam is
very over rated when it comes to comfort due to the technology of today. Those in the seat business are fond of saying their seat is better because their foam is better,  or that closed cell foam is better than open cell foam, and so on. Those that have access to the gel pads and other new ideas to make a seat more comfortable, all say the same and  have their individual opinions what makes it work best.
I will share with you a little about foam.

Closed Cell & Open Cell

We use closed cell foam because it is more comfortable in different applications. Not always, though closed cell foam have several advantages, these being the two most important ones for using it in motorcycle seats.

Closed cell is Fluid proof. Closed cell foam prevents any nasty fluids from soaking in and this is why it is widely used in various applications.  There fore, closed cell foam on a motorcycle seat can be of some help preventing it from getting soaked in the rain. Water can soak into open cell foam if left with a damaged seat cover and has lost it's water proof cover.

You will find Less rebound upon compression with closed cell and Open cell foam will push back. The harder you push, the harder it pushes back. Closed cell foam displaces differently. This can be an advantage in the rebuilding of some motorcycle seats to get different levels of comfort.

(There are disadvantages with closed cell)

Heat and water retention  Because closed cell foams have virtually no air pockets in comparison to open cell foams, they tend to be very warm, even hot especially on those hot days on the long rides. We tend not to use this for the top layer closest to the body because your sweat stays under your backside and has nowhere to go. Not recommended for that  great  ride into the blue horizon.

Shaping can be difficult. Closed cell foams are difficult to shape compared with open cell foam. When I use closed cell inserts, they may be placed on the frame or on open cell foam that can be sculpted to suit the different applications for individual riders.

What makes a comfortable motorcycle seat
Comfortable motorcycle seats
would be 75% fit and 25% the consistency of the foam.  A seat that is constructed well can be quite hard but still comfortable, We all have different tolerances and unfortunately we feel it through our backside. Well fitting seats can be reconstructed from different density foams and be relatively comfortable.  Adding foam comfort pads does reduce vibration, can give a sensation of extra comfort  in most cases. Allow for more movement in the thigh area giving more  reach to the ground at stop signs.

I don't claim to to have all the answers when it comes to customising motorcycle seat foam and reshaping. I do think I am better at it than many efforts I have seen in the past,
due to customers previous attempts by others to rectify their problems. I think about each seat when shaping for extra comfort . I know when some one discusses with me that they feel a problem here or a sore spot there. I relate their backside to the comfort I would like on a ride.
When it is comfortable, Fatigue may not be as much of a problem.

The Various Foams I Use

There are lots of different types of foam available, and each has its own unique properties.
When applied in the right areas to match your specific personal needs, these applications combine to make a comfortable motorcycle seat or saddle.
Some places emphasize memory foam as being the new foam of today. Truth be known, memory foam has been around for 30 years or more and is widely used in seat
manufacturing. Especially on motorcycle seats. These days we can make it to different specs depending on the requirement. Some use the name memory foam as a marketing tool to sell the product. The fact is It's been around for years .We just got a little smarter on how to use it.

Why do we use so many foams?

It is almost impossible to achieve equal and balanced weight distribution with single density moulded polyurethane foam. Varying the density can give firm support and increased comfort.

Light Open cell upholstery foam
This type of foam is basically for the finishing touch. It provides the padding to create a quilted look on seats that need that custom look or Quilted look. It provides a secure backing for the covering material and can hide any small imperfections when reshaping a seat

Low Density open celled foam
This type of foam is used in reducing the firmness of some motor bike seats that tend to be very hard and don't have any give. This can reduce your circulation in that area if too firm and cause hot spots.
Medium  open celled foam
This type of foam is used in rebuilding the seat foams depending on customer requirements and the density they need.
It may also be mixed and matched with other density foams as a comfort pad fitted in the existing seat  if the seat is uncomfortable.
High density open cell foam
This foam is especially dense and will not easily compress. Foam of this type is used for  heavy riders, and in the reconstruction of  custom seat rebuilds. this is   in cases where our medium density foam would provide (too much give.)
Existing moulded seat foams
Obviously, the stock foam  on your seat is perfectly moulded to the shape of your seat base. The base of the foam is moulded to the the irregular shape of seat base structure. Therefore, in some cases it would not make sense to remove the stock foam completely. Because of this some of your original  foam remains on your seat and we can build on that.

Custom Cumfy Foam
Some late model bike seats are not very backside friendly, due to the lack of good quality seat foam.
(Height and Density) can play a big part in your comfort.

Custom Cumfy Foam is our own unique and proprietary blend of memory foam. The resilience, firmness, and vibration absorption qualities make it well suited for a great range of applications.

Note: Most seats will take between a couple of hours to a day to break-in the materials to be effective for the riders comfort. The Foam we use is excelent quality. In some cases you may need a little longer to get the full advantage of the cumfy foam.
In cold weather you may find the seat feels quite hard and slightly uncomfortable. It may be very hard until your body heat warms the foam to its optimum temperature. After siting on the seat for a while you will find it becomes more comfortable. This is because the foam characteristics lends itself well to your body heat allowing it to operate the way it should.
Some riders might require custom adjustments to specific areas like the  inner thigh area  This can be a great advantage to the shorter rider that needs to get their feet closer to the ground for more support and stability. For a completely comfortable position sometimes we may like to have you sitting on the bike to get an idea on how to help you. We make these adjustments by reshaping the seat if required.
